Free letter tracing worksheets, A to Z
Writing letters by hand still matters. In the one study that compared them with preschoolers, the children who wrote letters by hand recognized them better than the ones who typed them [13]. We make a typing game, and we still say: keep the crayon.
26 rows, a capital and a lowercase letter in each, on three pages. Trace the gray letters, then try one alone at the end of the row. They fit A4 and US Letter.
How to use them
- Say it as you trace. "B. B says b." Kids taught a letter's name and sound together learned more than with the usual approach [10].
- Start with their name. Trace the letters of your child's name first. Young children learn those letters before the others [9].
- A few rows at a time. A few minutes on lots of days sticks better than one long sitting [19]. Come back tomorrow.
- Big first. Before the crayon, trace the letter with a finger, in sand, flour or on a foggy window.
Pair them with our free letter cards for a matching game, or hear every letter's sound.
Questions parents ask
What age are letter tracing worksheets for?
Ages 3 to 6. A 3 year old might trace one or two letters with a crayon, and that is plenty. An older child can trace a row and then write the letter on their own.
Should my child learn capital or lowercase letters first?
Both, side by side. Kids learn a small letter through how much it looks like its capital, so every row here has the two together.
Is tracing better than typing for learning letters?
In the one study that compared them with preschoolers, writing letters by hand helped children recognize them better than typing. Use both: tracing for the hand, and a game for finding letters and hearing their sounds.
