Free alphabet printables

A screen can ask "Can you find M?", but paper still matters: in the one study that compared them, preschoolers who wrote letters by hand recognized them better than the ones who typed them [13]. So next to the game we made two printables, free, for home or a classroom.

Both fit A4 and US Letter, three pages each. Print, cut or trace, and play. No sign-up.

Getting the most from them

  1. Name and sound together. Whatever the printable, say the letter's name and its sound: "S. S says sss." [10]
  2. Their name first. Pull out or trace the letters of your child's name before the others [9].
  3. Little and often. A few minutes on lots of days beats one long sitting [19].

Questions parents ask

Are these alphabet printables free?

Yes. Both sets are free to print at home or in a classroom, with no sign-up and no email. They fit A4 and US Letter.

Which printable should we start with?

For a 3 or 4 year old, start with the letter cards and match a few easy pairs, like O and o. Add the tracing sheets when they enjoy holding a crayon.

Why print letters when there are apps?

Writing letters by hand still matters. In the one study that compared them with preschoolers, writing letters helped children recognize them better than typing did. Paper and a screen work best together.
